marriage - not much of a future
I think the theme of marriage vs future is one of the most important themes found within the novel. From the feminist perspective, women of this time period did not stand to have much of a future except for marriage. Picking the right husband was like picking the right job or occupation, because it secured your future. Thus, women who did not marry did not have much of a future to look forward to.

I agree with you (since I do not have a partner). Women didn't have much of a future because after they married, they were a representation of their husband, like a shadow. :-(
I agree. Women were also abused a great deal by their husbands. They were not worth much by society's standards. I like how you commented on "picking the right husband was like picking the right job." the only problem is that most women that were married then did not work outside the home and those that did were looked down on because most people felt that the husband should be the ONLY provider for the household. Today, it is very common to have a 2 parent working household.
